The European Drag Racing Championship has been developed from initial negotiations between the NHRA (National Hot Rod Association) and the FIA. From this, the Drag Racing Commission, with the European organisers, developed a rule book for both racing, safety and construction of race cars. By 1997 the Championship was fully established on the FIA Calendar.

The Championship boasts a full schedule of world-wide TV programmes. Santa Pod Raceway hosts the opening round and the Championship Finals and is the only UK track with international status as recognized by the Motor Sports Association (MSA). It's success has been instrumental in the development of Drag Racing in Europe. Santa Pod Raceway and its owners, Trakbak Racing Ltd now control the commercial rights to the prestigious "FIA European Drag Racing Championships" and are directly responsible for all the European drag racing TV programmes and the associated commercial rights.
