Dragstalgia 2011 Report
The gates opened on Friday for the eager racers and fans to come in to the first ever Dragstalgia event. Unfortunately torrential rain on the Saturday morning put a stop to the mornings action on the Drag Strip but we had the guys from F1 Historic Stock Car Club that put on a fantastic show regardless of the weather. These guys had a number of races (Yes full on 15 lap races!!!) throughout the weekend which not only gave us some action while the Drag Strip was out of order but also provided some great entertainment throughout.
There were plenty of static displays around including a World War 2 Military vehicle display and also the Historic vehicle marquee which featured Robin Reads Daimler dragster, Russ Carpenters Glacier Grenade, the famous Allard Chrysler, Commuter, Hounddog 1, The Hobbit, Olympus and Gerry Tyack’s famous Ginetta on the Saturday which was replaced with the Shovvin Chevy on Sunday. Stu Bradbury could even be seen wearing his original chief starter jacket! In addition to this there were DVD’s of the Doc Furniss DVD showing footage from when the track was an active airfield and footage from Time Travel DVD’s which showed racing in the early days of the dragstrip.
Luckily as the afternoon wore on, the skies cleared and before long we had glorious sunshine to help dry the track. As always the track crew did a superb job and we were on with some racing. Unfortunately we only had a limited time until our 9 o clock curfew but we did our best to give everyone as much track time as possible including the RWYBers which had been patiently waiting and included some fantastic nostalgic vehicles. Both the Split Second and FireForce 3 Jet Cars came round to give us a heart warming jet blast and over the racing we had a fantastic low flypast from a BBMF Hurricane adding to the Nostalgia feel.
All of the buzz from the event seems to be about the Saturday night show on track. For the first time in many years here at Santa Pod we had an on track Cacklefest which featured a fantastic selection of vehicles including Wendy Bakers TimeWarp Nostalgia Funny Car which added a welcome whiff of nitro to the evening air. That however was not the finale of the show because we still had one last on track activity for the day in the form of some flaming burnouts and they did not disappoint. We had a total of 5 cars that very kindly volunteered to come round and take part, risking their pride and joy to put on a show and the photos speak for themselves. Huge thanks to everyone that took part in both the Cacklefest and the flaming burnouts and also Rob Loaring of ICE Automotive who showed us just how it’s done.
All eyes then turned to the Fuelers Bar for the line up of evening entertainment as hosted by MilkCow Magazine. They brought along a fantastic line up for us including DJ’s, bands in the form of the Humdingers and the Cheaterslicks and of course a line up of Burlesque girls which went down a storm.
Sunday morning looked promising as the weather allowed us to open the track on time to give the RWYBers some more track time as well as conclude Saturdays Top Sportsman Competition. The Show n Shine ran on the Sunday which produced an immaculate line up of machinery, Thanks go out to Ginner Middleton and Terry Howes who have previously judged the Best of Britain awards for judging this one for us, the results were as follows:
The fans were treated to some excellent racing throughout the day, from both the invited race classes and RWYB, but in the end the persistent showers drew a close to the days racing before we came to a conclusion in the elimination classes.
Here are the results from the LA Racing Parts Track Trophies for the weekend:
Low ET of the Weekend – Steph Milam – 6.11 seconds
Burnout of the Weekend – Ron Bartlett
Wheelie of the Weekend – Neil Hunter
Driving Job of the Weekend – Paul Wright
Best Appearing Team – Mark Coulsell in the BallBreaker Slingshot
Best Back-Up Girl of the Weekend – Steven Hudson (No one else made the effort!)
Other notable runs from the weekend include John Hobbs on the Hobbit who put in a storming pass of 8.6 seconds, Graham Ellis in his Plymouth Barracuda who put in a stout 6.5 second run.
Thank You to everyone who came along and supported this event and all of those involved in putting on the show (including the racers), we hope that you can appreciate we did as much as we could given the weather conditions. We’ll see you at next years event if not before!
