The unusually mild conditions combined with a bright and dry day meant that the show went off with a bang… and we don’t just mean the huge firework display!
With such great drag racing conditions, the track became the focus for the day, and a huge mix of drag demos hit the strip hard. Highlights of the track action were a 4-second pass by Finnish driver Risto Poutianinen in an 8,000bhp Top Fuel dragster, and a world-record beating run by Frenchman Eric Teboul on his insane rocket bike. Eric’s headline-writing run was a 5.2090 second pass at 281.47 mph! If it looked fast from the grandstand, imagine how it felt for the man in the hotseat!
The track also played host to a number of late-season personal bests for many racers, and a whole bunch of bonkers race vehicles including wheelie-popping Fiats and jet-powered go karts. Oh, and who could forget the retro-drags-style of the flaming burnouts! What a sight, and all in a day’s work for Flame & Thunder!
Off track, there was of course the huge bonfire, lit by legendary Pod veteran Ronnie Picardo in his jet truck, and a monster firework display to conclude the night.
The Live Action Arena was buzzing with adrenaline-pumping shows that included stunt drivers and riders, monster trucks, and drift shows. The entertainment even extended into the sky, as stunt planes, parachutists and (believe it or not) motorcycles took to the air with more mad stunts. Back on terra-firma kids were kept amused with a visit from Peppa Pig, The Simpsons, and once they had got over the natural shyness that comes with meeting an 8ft tall mechanoid, Titan the Robot too! Add into the mix live American wrestling and a Katie Perry tribute act, and all tastes and attention spans were fully catered for.
The 2011 Flame & Thunder show will be remembered as one of the best yet, so a huge thanks go to everyone who made it along to celebrate the end of the season: spectators, racers and artistes. See you next year!
…or alternatively, if you can’t get enough of the fireworks and stunt shows, see you back next weekend for Fireworks Frenzy!
