Santa Pod Season Review 2007
Santa Pod Raceway had its most packed season ever in 2007, with a calendar crammed with events for all types of motoring enthusiast. The season started off with a few eagerly anticipated Run What Ya Brung events, and went into the Stunt night/Saturday Night Special 3-day-weekend. The first ever Stunt Night event was a great success, with breathtaking stunts, entertaining shows and amazing drag vehicles.
March saw the Straightliners weekend roll into the Pod, where hundreds of bikers ripped up the strip and then into Santa Pod’s first performance and modified car event: The Fast Show. Thousands turned up and enjoyed the RWYB and off track action, really growing the Fast Show year-on-year.
April saw the return of national drag racing to the Pod, with the skies clear and an action-filled weekend both on and off track at the Easter Thunderball. After the Thunderball came the enthusiast events of the GTi Festival and RS Owners Club Day.
The last weekend in April was reserved for more Vee Dubs, and Big Bang was a packed festival of music, VW drag racing and great show cars from all eras.
May opened with the first ever Performance, Tuning and Modified Show, and the first ever round of the HKS Drag Series. Both were a stunning success, showing a serious side to the modified car scene and some amazing action on the track. Unfortunately the Redline God of the Pod was badly affected by the very worst of England’s weather, and was rained off. The last weekend in May is reserved for the first round of the European Drag Racing Championships, and the Main Event was all set to go when the weather once again let us down and the event was cut short. The action was looking promising up till that point with some great action both on and off track.
June started off with the famous Vauxhall griffin the only animal allowed on site for the Performance Vauxhall Show. Then it was all change for the blue ovals of the Classic Ford show, and then yet another wet weekend for the JapShow June. However, it didn’t stop thousands of cars turning up for a great club meeting and probably the best wet weather event Santa Pod has ever hosted.
July started off with the fabulously upbeat and sunny Retro Show, packed with cars bikes and scooters from back in the day. They don’t make ‘em like they used to, and a beige Austin Princess never looked so good. Next up in July was the diesel-burnin’ Truck Show and then the big birthday bash for Bug Jam. Yet another washout of a weekend was had, but a bit of rain didn’t dampen the spirits of the thousands who turned up and made the most of the great entertainment. July ended with the MOPAR nats- a fitting tribute to the V8 engine.
August opened with a stunning summer weekend at Ultimate Street Car, with some of the best weather and best fun ever to be had at Santa Pod. Everything came together beautifully, with hot cars, hot music and hot bodies in abundance. Rotorstock came to Santa Pod for the first time in August 2007, and it was a mind-blowing weekend of performance Japanese cars in round 3 of the HKS Drag Series, with several cars way into the 8’s for the first time. August ended in yet more rain, but the Mini in the Park event was still very popular despite the inclement conditions.
Moving into September, things kicked off with VW Action, and then went onto the European Finals; the last round of the European Drag Racing Championship. The weather was good and the racing even better, with some thrilling pairings and astonishing times. September also played host to the Extreme Performance Bike event for more two-wheeled action and the Ultimate BMW Show, which grew massively for its second year with some top cars on show. September finished with the National Finals and some more great sportsman racing.
October used to be the end of the serious racing season, but the JapShow Finale had things heated up to boiling point with the conclusion of the HKS Drag Series. Records fell and heroes rose by the end of the weekend.
November is expected to be cold and wet, but the unexpectedly pleasant weather brought thousands to the Pod for the true finale to the 2007 season: the Flame & Thunder Show. With a great mix of stuff on the track, and some frantic action off track too, it was the busiest Flame & Thunder show ever, topped off with some celebratory fireworks.
We hope you had a great year at the Pod See you next year… it’s nearly here!
